Where in the world is...
The 45th Parallel crosses State Highway One just north of Oamaru. The visitor travelling into the region sees quirky Steampunk sculptures and a hint of the Oamaru Whitestone columns which make the town famous. The main street hosts many classical, beautifully restored Victorian era buildings but the true jewel of Oamaru is found in the historic precinct where a variety of historic buildings in various states of restoration house artists and boutique shops. This is also the area to dicover why Oamaru is the Steampunk Capital of New Zealand.
In the district there are also many historic homesteads, estates and mills that tell the story of the Waitaki's farming past.
